Louisiana Master Gardener is a LSU AgCenter program that trains volunteers in horticulture in exchange for volunteer service dedicated back into the program. Master Gardener volunteers are highly trained and provide proven, research-based educational programs to Louisiana residents. The Lafayette Parish Master Gardener Association (LPMGA) is unique in that it is a cooperative effort between the LSU AgCenter's Lafayette Parish Extension Office and ULL’s Ira Nelson Horticulture Center.
You can be a Master Gardener if:
- You attend all training classes where you will learn about plant diseases, plant propagation, insects, vegetables, fruits, turf, ornamentals and more.
- You are willing to provide research-based information to the public.
- You can give 40 volunteer hours of service back to the Master Gardener Program.
Where are classes held?
LSU AgCenter partners with ULL to conduct the training at ULL’s Ira Nelson Horticulture Center, 2206 Johnston St. in Lafayette, LA.
Classes are typically held on Thursdays from 8:45 am—3:00 pm, August through November.
How much does the training cost?
The cost of the program is approximately $275. This fee includes the cost of the LMG manual, badge, certificates, two years of LPMGA dues and admission to the LPMGA graduation dinner and social. In return for the training, Master Gardeners have 1 year to complete 40 volunteer hours to the Master Gardener Program.
What happens after the initial obligation?
You are encouraged to continue as a Lafayette Parish Master Gardener by paying annual dues of $20, taking 6 hours of additional horticulture education and performing 20 hours of volunteer service each year. Monthly educational meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month and members continue to meet year-round at the LPMGA greenhouse to practice plant propagation and maintain demonstration beds.
Class application must be received by 12:00 midnight on May 31st to be considered for this year's course.
